Genre
Why we decided to produce a psychological drama:
We decided to produce a drama because it is very broad and does not limit us with the audience it appeals to. Also with drama we can use mise-en-scène for a greater effect and this adds significance to the film.
We originally wanted to do a psychological thriller but that limited us with the plot of the film especially the ending. It also limited us in target audience as more people prefer drama to psychological thriller, whereas with a drama we could have more freedom with the plot and still have some thriller elements to it. With our original plot, we realised it had similar aspects to another psychological thriller, ‘Single White Female’, and we thought changing the genre would then cause our plot to change, giving it more individuality.
We decided to have a hybrid genre of a psychological drama We looked at similar films in the drama genre such as ‘Forrest Gump’ and ‘Shawshank Redemption’ and we tried to incorporate some relevant aspects of that into our film, such as a voiceover by the main character and the use of orchestral music.

Locations Research Notes
Locations research
London- We chose the location of London as it is an iconic city, more specifically Camden Lock and Tower Bridge. The size and business of London helps emphasise the thought of Roses sister being lost and hard to find.
Kitchen- A kitchen we feel is a place where people gather, a place where food is prepared for families as a sign of love. This is contradicting as the only item in the kitchen of Rose house is the vodka bottle. This is almost a sign that the only love her mother has is for alcohol.
Park- The clip of Rose in the park is to show her freedom. The park is a very large and quiet area where rose can be ‘free’ to do as she pleases. As she is going through the park it shows her connection to nature which connotes purity.
Bedroom- When rose is in her bedroom at the care home, her bedroom represents her personal space and the fact she is isolated from everyone else. She likes her own company. The decoration will include Rose petals to relate to the theme and her name.
Conference police room- The police room emphases the seriousness of the situation Rose is in. This is shown by the emptiness of the room, like the emptiness of love in her life. Also shows she is isolated to the rest of the world. The professional atmosphere is represented by the notebooks and tape recorder.
Character and Representational Research Notes
Character and Representational Research
Rose- Rose is represented as a young, vulnerable and scared girl. This is shown through her clothing; white dress represents femininity and purity. She is a young victim of child abuse. Her characteristic when she protects her sister from harm shows the love and bond she has for her sibling who portrays responsibility for Rose. We will show this through Rose placing her arm round her sister to comfort her. This creates sympathy from the reader as such a young figure shouldn’t be dealing with this much responsibility in the circumstances she is in.
Police officers- The police officers represent authority and reassurance to the audience that there is justice in the common society. Their uniform, posture and serious facial expressions help to build their look of importance. A low camera angle will be used to make the officers appear powerful.
Little Sister- Roses little sister represents naivety. Although within a family of abuse and alcoholism she is so young to really understand what is going on. She is extremely vulnerable and relies solely on her older sister to protect her from danger…
Mum and Dad- The mum and dad in this story strongly represent instability and addiction. The mixture of the mother’s alcoholism and the fathers violent tempeh create a sea of dangers for their two young children that have to experience the wrath of their parents on a daily bases. The background music of Ring a ring a roses will have a more aggressive tone to it when played whilst the parents are shown.

Rose- The Plot
Rose
Rose, a nineteen year old female, is facing every teenager’s idea
of hell- as on a daily basis she has to deal with the raff of her abusive
father and alcoholic mother, all whilst caring for her younger sibling, whom
she has to comfort daily by singing to them; “Ring-a-ring-a-roses”. On Rose’s nineteenth birthday, she receives only a single
red rose from her parents. Out of spite and disgust, she burns it, unknown to
her mother’s smashed bottle of vodka on the floor... The spilt vodka and the
burnt rose create a massive house fire. As the house burns around her Rose panics and without thinking she quickly escapes.
To only find out once she’s out that she has left her vulnerable frightened
sibling behind....
Six months later, Rose is stuck in a care home all alone and isolated,
with nobody left in her life. She’s clearly unhappy when one day she gets an
unexpected visit from the police to question her. Paranoid and unsure of what’s
going on the police inform her that her sister has gone missing. Confusion
consumes Rose as she was
certain her sister would have died in the flames that burnt down her home and
killed both her parents. With a glimmer of happiness that her sister is still
alive Rose goes on the the run to search for her
long lost sibling. With nowhere to stay and no knowledge of her sisters
whereabouts Rose is sleeping rough and barely
surviving. A dash of hope comes along when an attractive young man comforts Rose and offers to give her a place to stay. Wary at
first but as time goes on the naive teenager begins to trust her saviour,
perhaps too much as she starts to appreciate his good attention. Overtime, her
feelings for him become more intense, leading to her willingness to do whatever
he asks of her... It soon becomes clear to the audience that he hasn’t got her
best interests at heart and he is involved with the disappearance of her young
sister. Overhearing a conversation between her sister’s captor and the man she
has fallen in love, Rose becomes aware of where
her sister is and the dangerous situation she’s got herself into. Frightened
and scared Rose runs out of the backdoor and to
the location of her sister. As they emotionally reunite Rose vows to never let her go again.

Preliminary Task
Our Preliminary Task on YouTube; we had to film and edit a character opening a door, crossing the room and sitting down in a chair opposite another character who then delve into conversation. We had to include a match on action shot, a shot/reverese shot and follow the 180 degree rule. The match on action is shot 15-18 seconds in the clip. The shot reverse shot is 25-33 seconds in.
